In this video, I offer guidance regarding what parents can expect and how best to support a child affected by withdrawal:
More than anything, remember that even in the worst cases, where the symptoms are persisting and there seems to be no evidence of healing, your son or daughter will eventually get better. As devastating as it can be, withdrawal is temporary and it will not go on indefinitely. The symptoms will eventually subside and your loved one will get better. The outcome of withdrawal is recovery and the day will come when life will return to normal and your loved one will be able to pick up the pieces and move on.
In the meantime, take good care of yourself. Have a look at our Self-Care section for caregivers and be sure to get the support you need. You are welcome to join us in the Relatives Support Room (which is a secret Facebook group) where I can give you support and you can also connect with other parents.
Wishing you all the best,
